TTEdSIG PCE 2024: Theory, Practice and Identity in Second Language Teacher Education

Join IATEFL Teacher Training & Education Special Interest Group (TTEdSIG) for their in person 2024 Pre-Conference Event on 15 April 2024- Theory, Practice and Identity in Second Language Teacher Education

In this year’s PCE, attendees will be involved in four workshops that aim to explore theory, practice and identity of second language teacher educators. Attendees can expect to explore their personal histories as teacher educators, their beliefs and how these have been influenced by their contexts, personal backgrounds, etc., whilst at the same time examining various teacher education practices and reflecting on their effectiveness.

Speaker 1- Jim Fuller

Jim is a teacher, trainer, and manager based in Spain. His interests lie in language teacher education, task-based learning and second language acquisition. You can find him blogging about his experiences at spongeelt.org.

Speaker 2- Gary Barkhuizen

Gary Barkhuizen is professor of applied linguistics at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. His teaching and research interests are language teacher education, teacher and learner identity, study abroad, and narrative inquiry. He has published widely in these areas, including his most recent books, Communicating Identities (2020, Routledge, with Pat Strauss), Language Teacher Educator Identity (2021, Cambridge University Press), and Language Teachers Studying Abroad (2022, Multilingual Matters). Professor Barkhuizen has presented on all these topics at conferences and workshops in many countries around the world.

Speaker 3- Matthew Ellman

Matthew Ellman is Professional Learning and Development Manager at Cambridge University Press and Assessment, designing and delivering training for teachers, institutions and Ministries of Education around the world. He has worked as a teacher and trainer in the UK, Spain and Malaysia, and has delivered courses, workshops and talks in a further 30 countries. Matthew’s research into teacher education won the British Council’s MA Dissertation Award at the 2018 ELTons, and he is the lead author of From Teacher to Trainer, published by Cambridge University Press in 2022.

Speaker 4- Bahar Gün

Asst.Prof.Dr. Bahar Gün holds BA, MA and PhD degrees in ELT. She currently works as a lecturer and a trainer in the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). She is the former head of the Teacher Development Unit in the SFL. Her research interests include EFL teacher education in general, and teacher cognition and RTL in particular. She is also a CELTA tutor. She has presented in many national and international conferences and extensively published in the field of ELT.
