TTEdSIG: 'Effective monkey management in the ELT classroom'

A TTEdSIG webinar with Jaber Kamali

Nowadays, the significance of implementing a learner-centered approach to ELT classroom management is widely accepted (Waters, 1998). ‘Monkey management’ – the correct assignment of responsibility for the next step in a problem-solving process (Blanchard et al. 1990) –  is an important means of achieving this, however, has not received the attention it deserves. Thus, this webinar intends to put this concept into the spotlight. To this end, the webinar will start with elaborating on the monkey concept and its implication in ELT classrooms and teacher training milieus. Then, the typical behavior of the monkey in ELT and some of the problems it can cause in the classroom will be introduced. After that, the reasons of these problems will be delineated. Finally, several strategies for coping successfully with ELT classroom monkeys will be discussed based on Waters (1998) and the trainer’s own experience.
