ESOLSIG: An app for adult ESOL beginners – The Belfast story

An IATEFL ESOLSIG webinar presented by Arthur McKeown

During this webinar, Arthur McKeown will present on the work that has been undertaken to develop an app for adult ESOL learners. His talk will focus on how the app has been developed, how it has been used, its success and additional work that may be required.

The session will start by looking at the needs of adult learners, especially migrants, refugees and asylum seekers and the context in which ESOL has been delivered in Belfast and beyond, both face-to-face and online.

The session will then focus on how the app has been used to support individual learners and some of its key features, including:

  • Zoom sessions (available through YouTube)
  • Resources to provide further additional presentations of key language
  • Activities to practise and produce the key language introduced in Zoom sessions.
  • Reading resources and activities, particularly those that localise the language learners are acquiring
  • Some self-test quizzes to help individual learners monitor their progress

The presenter will also talk about the development process of the app, including:

  • the design, documentation and delivery process,
  • the associated costs,
  • the user responses to the first two presentations of the 'Beginners course' using the resource in Belfast and beyond,
  • suggestions about how the app could be developed further and possible applications of the model.
