ESOLSIG: Worth the Risk: Decoding and Decentering Whiteness in English Language Teaching
An ESOLSIG webinar presented by JPB Gerald
Introduction by IATEFL Vice President, Gabriel Diaz Maggioli
In this one hour presentation, JPB Gerald will demonstrate how ELT frames whiteness as both a prize and a goal, explain the deleterious impact whiteness has on racialized students and teachers, argue for the necessity of decentering whiteness, and provide suggestions for ways we can push our field towards a future where whiteness no longer reigns supreme.
JPB Gerald, a 2012 alum of The New School’s MA TESOL program, is an EdD student at CUNY – Hunter College, focusing, as you can probably tell, on language, race, and whiteness. You can listen to his podcast on the same topics at anchor.fm/Unstandardized, his writing can be found at jpbgerald.com, and his overly active twitter account is @JPBGerald.
This webinar will take place on the Zoom platform. On registration, joining instructions and reminders will be sent to your email address.
