YLTSIG Mini Course B: Using picturebooks in Primary English language teaching

A YLTSIG 3 day mini course facilitated on Zoom by The PEPELT Team
 

This certified mini course is being run alongside the IATEFL Young Learners and Teenagers Special Interest Group (YLTSIG) online conference on the 27, 28 and 29 November 2020. This course, 'Using picturebooks in Primary English language teaching' will be run between 15.00 and 17.00 (UK time) each day and will cover the following areas:

Friday 27 November: The why and the what – definition, rationale and selection

Understanding what makes a picturebook, the theory and benefits of a story-based approach and the criteria to use when selecting picturebooks for a specific group of children learning English.

Saturday 28 November: A story-based methodology – using picturebooks

Planning a programme of work around a picturebook and setting learning objectives and outcomes in line with your English language syllabus.

Sunday 29 November: Reading aloud effectively and discovering ready-made resources

Knowing how to read a picturebook aloud effectively and confidently and using a range of techniques to support children’s understanding and maximise their involvement in the read-aloud experience.

Mini course facilitators

Gail Ellis has been working with picturebooks since 1989. Her publications include Tell it Again!, Teaching children how to learn, and Teaching English to Pre-Primary Children. Gail’s interests include children’s rights, picturebooks in primary ELT, young learner ELT management and inclusive practices.

Tatia Gruenbaum taught EFL, EAP and ESP at a number of Higher and Further Education institutions in London and is now an English lecturer at the Avans University of Applied Sciences in Breda (NL) and a PhD candidate at the UCL Institute of Education. She holds an MA TESOL from the IoE and her PhD research centres on the use of picturebooks as a tool in pre-service primary teacher education in the Netherlands. 

Sandie Mourão is a research fellow at Nova University Lisbon, where she is researching picturebooks for intercultural citizenship education. She has been in ELT for over 30 years, using picturebooks in the classroom and in teacher education, with a particular interest in early language learning. 

Anneta Sadowska-Martyka is a psychologist and a teacher. She has been sharing picturebooks with young learners of English for 30 years in Poland. She is also a teacher educator. Anneta’s interests include teaching English through art, mindfulness in the ELT classroom and cooperative learning. She has been awarded European Language Labels for three projects.

Gail, Tatia, Sandie and Anneta are co-founders of PEPELT – Picturebooks in European Primary English Language Teaching.
