Supporting the global English language teaching profession

IATEFL’s mission is ‘linking, developing and supporting English language teaching professionals worldwide’. As a registered charity, the association supports the profession in a number of ways.

Providing professional development opportunities

IATEFL organises a wide range of events throughout the year, including webinars, in-person events and an annual international conference. Whilst IATEFL members benefit from a searchable archive of resources, certificates of attendance and free or reduced cost attendance, the majority of these are open to all ELT professionals to join.

Support for national teaching associations

Non-profit national teaching associations can apply to join our network of IATEFL Associate teaching associations free of charge. As well as

Support in countries and regions with no local teaching association

If you live in a country where there is no teaching association then you could apply for free membership of IATEFL through our Wider Membership Individual Scheme, which is funded in the hope that recipients will go on to help set up a local teaching association.

Support for teachers who have never attended or presented at an international conference

IATEFL offers a wide range of scholarship opportunities each year to attend the IATEFL international conference. These are funded by the association, by Special Interest Groups and also by generous support from others in the profession. Find out more about IATEFL Scholarships.

Support for teachers who have never had an article published

IATEFL members can submit articles to be published in IATEFL Voices member magazine which is published every other month. For members who have never written an article like this before, support is offered to help you through the process.

Support as the profession addresses sustainability

IATEFL is committed to addressing the climate emergency. Sustainability is built in to every level of decision-making throughout the association, and an annual report shares all that the association is doing in order to be fully accountable, and also to share ideas with others in the profession. Through the Green IATEFL website IATEFL aims to share ideas, links to resources and toolkits to help promote and encourage sustainable practice.
