YLTSIG PCE 2022: Integrating interculturality in children’s and teenagers’ English language education

Join IATEFL Young Learners & Teenagers SIG for their 2022 Pre-Conference Event on 16 May.

The IATEFL YLTSIG 2022 Pre-Conference Event will explore interculturality from the perspectives advocated by UNESCO. These views embrace a fluid notion of culture and cultural diversity which prioritise the importance of engaging in dialogue and fostering mutual respect. As interculturality is becoming increasingly prominent in national and English language learning curricula globally, the theme is both necessary and timely.

From 10.00 to 17.00, we will explore the challenges, opportunities as well as various pedagogical approaches for integrating interculturality in English language education for children and teenagers. The session line-up will include an opening plenary to set the scene, three hands-on workshops focused on early years, primary and secondary ELT respectively, an open-space for reflection, and a closing plenary to explore future actions for teacher education and classroom practice. The day will end with an interactive quiz and a raffle. Each session will include interaction between the speakers and delegates and light refreshments will be served during the breaks for networking.

We are delighted to confirm that former IATEFL President, Carol Read will give the opening plenary to frame interculturality in the context of TEYL. IATEFL YLTSIG Blogs Editor, Joan Kang Shin will facilitate the early years workshop on using a creative, international children’s songs approach for intercultural learning. Then, IATEFL YLTSIG Coordinator, David Valente will deliver the primary workshop on using picturebooks to develop intercultural citizenship education. This will be followed by Kieran Donaghy’s secondary workshop which will focus on short films and videos for fostering empathy and intercultural awareness. The closing plenary will be delivered by Ashley Simpson whose critical interculturality stance includes enabling learners of English to challenge hate speech, racism and discrimination.
