YLTSIG Mini Course C: Reaching and teaching teenagers in ELT

A YLTSIG 3 day mini course facilitated on Zoom by Leticia Moraes

This certified mini course is being run alongside the IATEFL Young Learners and Teenagers Special Interest Group (YLTSIG) online conference on the 27, 28 and 29 November 2020. This course, 'Reaching and teaching teenagers in ELT' will be run between 18.15 and 20.15 (UK time) each day and will cover the following areas:

Friday 27 November: What does it mean to teach teenagers in ELT?

Frequently, teaching this age range is associated with difficult learners. Adolescence is indeed a challenging period, but this does not mean that teaching teenagers should be a burden. On the first day of this mini course, we will investigate developmental characteristics of teenagers and how they impact Englishlearning and teaching.

Saturday 28 November: Active learning strategies

We will investigate what active learning means and how it can help us to cater for the developmental characteristics of adolescents in ELT.

Sunday 29 November: Using projects and gamification

On the last day of the mini course, we will analyse how project work and gamification can be powerful tools to promote active learning in the English classroom so that we can reach and teach teenagers more effectively.
