General Guidelines for Scholarships

IATEFL is providing an increasing number of different scholarships for English language teaching professionals. So you need to read carefully both these general guidelines and the specific conditions for each scholarship you wish to apply for. We're sorry but if you don't keep to the conditions and deadlines your scholarship applications cannot be considered. Our scholarship deadline is 1st September 2010. But please note that:

BESIG Conference Scholarships have a July deadline and are for attendance at the BESIG conference in the autumn. They are not for the main conference. (The BESIG Facilitators Scholarship is for attendance at the main conference and has a deadline of 1st September 2010.)
Consultants-E Online IATEFL Scholarship also has different deadlines and you can win a course not a conference attendance
John Haycraft Classroom Exploration Scholarship has a different deadline, June 7th 2010 for the Brighton Conference 2011
for this year only the Cambridge ESOL scholarships' submission deadline will be 25th October 2010 (for the conference in Brighton 2011)
you cannot win the same scholarship twice
and if you have won a scholarship already, you cannot apply for another award until 3 conferences have passed

If you are applying for more than one scholarship, you only need to send one photograph. If you are a winner, this photograph will be printed in the conference brochure and on the scholars' poster. So, while we ask for a passport-sized photo, it shouldn't be passport-glum.

Many scholarships now include as part of the award a year's IATEFL membership. If you are already a member and you win one of these awards, the payment will cover your next year's membership.

All applicants for each scholarship will be informed by email of the result of the selection procedure at the stated date. So, stand by for the news and if you are a winner, let us know immediately whether or not you will accept the award.

If you are a winner, we will discuss details of how the award is to be paid once you have confirmed your acceptance. Most of the award is paid at conference but a proportion can be paid in advance to help with your travel costs.

Please have available a current CV and passport photo, ready to upload. You should read the details of all the scholarships, listed below, before you start your application to ensure that you apply for those that are appropriate - each scholarship has particular criteria. Please scroll down for details of all the individual scholarships then go back to apply. You are able to apply for more than one scholarship with one application, just follow the instructions. Each scholarship requires a specific statement. Africa Scholarship

The scholarship is for a teacher or teacher trainer in Africa to attend the conference.

BESIG Facilitator Scholarship

This new scholarship is for a teacher to attend the IATEFL Conference for the first time and to give a presentation on the BESIG Programme Day

Cactus to Conference Scholarship

This scholarship is intended to enable a teacher new to ELT to enjoy the experiences of attending an IATEFL annual conference and being an IATEFL member

Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in English for Academic Purposes Scholarship

This new scholarship gives the opportunity for any teacher involved with teaching English for Academic Purposes to attend the IATEFL annual conference Brighton 2011.

Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in Language Assessment Scholarship

This scholarship gives the opportunity for anyone with an interest in Language Assessment to attend the IATEFL annual conference in Brighton 2011.

Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in State Education Scholarship

This scholarship gives the opportunity for any teacher involved in state education to attend the IATEFL annual conference in Brighton 2011.

Cambridge ESOL Best Practice in Teacher Training Scholarship

This scholarship provides an opportunity for a teacher trainer involved with the formal or informal training and development of teachers to attend IATEFL Brighton 2011.

Dr Peter Hargreaves Scholarship (Cambridge ESOL)

This scholarship, funded by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, is in the memory of Dr Peter Hargreaves. The scholarship is open to any ELT professional or aspiring ELT professional and gives the opportunity to attend IATEFL Brighton 2011.

Consultants-E Online IATEFL Scholarship

A scholarship for a teacher unable to attend the annual conference in person but who participates actively in the online conference moodle.

Frank Bell IATEFL Scholarship

A scholarship for a teacher or teacher trainer to attend the conference for the first time

Gill Sturtridge First-Time Speaker IATEFL Conference Scholarship

Conference scholarship for first time presenter

Gillian Porter Ladousse Scholarship

Conference scholarship for a teacher trainer and/or trainee

International House Global Reach Scholarship

For people resident and native of distant countries, who are practising teachers.

International House John Haycraft Classroom Exploration Scholarship

This award is aimed at practising teachers to present the results of their classroom research. Deadline 7th June 2010

International House Training and Development Scholarship

This scholarship enables a teacher trainer/developer working in either private or state sector education to present their work to a wider audience by giving a presentation at the IATEFL annual conference.

Latin America Scholarship

The scholarship is for a teacher or teacher trainer in Latin America to attend conference

Leadership and Management SIG Scholarship

This new scholarship is for a person in an ELT leadership/management role, such as Director of Studies, Academic Manager, Summer School Organiser or similar, to attend the main IATEFL Conference

LT SIG Diana Eastment Scholarship

A scholarship to commemorate Diana Eastment the founder of MUESLI

LT SIG Travel Scholarship

A travel fund to assist Learning Technologies SIG members in attending the conference.

OISE Young Learners Scholarship

This scholarship is to enable a practising teacher of young learners to attend the IATEFL annual conference for the first time

Pilgrims Humanising Language Teaching Scholarship

This scholarship is to enable a practising teacher in any teaching situation to attend the IATEFL annual conference for the first time and to have the opportunity to be published in www.hltmag.co.uk and in IATEFL publications

Pilgrims Teacher Trainer Journal Scholarship

This scholarship is to enable a practising teacher or teacher trainer to lead a workshop at the IATEFL annual conference for the first time and to have the opportunity to be published in the Teacher Trainer Journal

Ray Tongue Scholarship

Conference scholarship for teachers from East and South East Asia

TD SIG Articulating Development Scholarship

This scholarship is for a teacher to attend the IATEFL Conference for the first time and to have the opportunity to be published in the Teacher Development SIG Newsletter.

Trinity College London Language Examinations Scholarship

This scholarship, funded by Trinity College London, enables an ELT professional working in the field of examinations development to present their work to a wider audience.

Trinity College London Teacher Trainer Scholarship

A scholarship funded by Trinity College London for a trainer working in the field of teacher qualifying courses.

WR Lee Scholarship

Conference scholarship for teachers from Central and Eastern Europe

IATEFL BESIG Conference Scholarship

The aim of the BESIG Conference Scholarships, funded by BESIG and Cambridge ESOL, is to enable participants who so far have never been to a BESIG conference or have only taken part in local events to attend the annual international BESIG conference (19-21 November 2010, Bielefeld, Germany).
