International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language
Linking, developing and supporting English Language Teaching professionals worldwide
The Wider Membership Scheme (WMS) helps the international ELT community reach out to teachers in parts of the world who need additional financial support.
Established over ten years ago, WMS helps provide teachers with professional development that would otherwise be beyond their means.
Each year IATEFL Associates are invited to apply for a limited number of places on the scheme. An Advisory Committee looks at all the bids and the money available, and puts forward suggestions to our Coordinating Committee for allocation of the memberships. Decisions are based on the position of each country on the HDI list, together with estimated earnings of teachers in that country. Successful Associations are then awarded memberships at a significantly reduced rate which they can allocate to individual teachers.
The IATEFL Head Office will contact all Associates each year to invite them to put in a bid, either by the forms attached to the email, or electronically using this link WMS Online bid. Please note this in only activated when bidding is available.
If you need more information on how to apply, our criteria and what we can do for you please contact the office.
This has led to tangible improvements in English language teaching and learning in parts of the world that need support the most.

At the 2013 IATEFL Conference in Liverpool, Macmillan Education held a fundraising event at the iconic Liverpool Cavern Club. The evening was a huge success and Macmillan very kindly donated one third of the proceeds raised from ticket sales to the IATEFL WMS fund. They then matched this amount to donate a grand total of £1,157.
Macmillan Education’s International Marketing Director, Jo Greig said ‘we’re so proud to be able to support the IATEFL WMS, it’s a great cause, and we know our donation will help teachers in parts of the world who need additional financial support and to aid their professional development, a cause we feel strongly about here at Macmillan Education’.
IATEFL would like to thank all at Macmillan for their continued support and generosity.
