The St Giles Educational Trust (SGET) aims to raise standards in the teaching of English language and is committed to increasing access to professional development opportunities for overseas teachers of English.

In partnership with IATEFL, the SGET is offering a training award to an IATEFL Associate. The award incorporates up to 15 days of training from the SGET trainers.

What should the training cover?

The teacher training placements offered through the award will be designed to meet local needs. The target group could be teachers delivering English language courses, school/college teachers or teacher trainers. The association should be able to demonstrate that the outcomes from the training received will be sustainable and will need to explain how they will be disseminated for the wider benefit of the local teaching community.

Where does the training take place?

The training will take place in the successful Associate’s country or region. Two of the SGET teacher trainers will conduct the training or one teacher trainer and one teacher, depending on the nature of the programme.

What will the successful Teaching Association need to provide?

  • A suitable venue to hold the training with basic refreshments provided.
  • Resources and equipment to allow the training sessions to be conducted.
  •  Local accommodation and travel for the trainers in a safe and secure environment.
  • Any expenses relating to the participation of local teachers.
  •  Evidence of an established relationship with national or regional education authorities and/or other relevant decision making bodies.

Examples of how the training days could be used:

  • Upgrading  local teachers’ own language competence
  • Training to help local teachers or trainers utilise learning technology
  • Development of teaching materials
  • Guidance on curriculum or programme design
  • Supporting experienced teachers  in becoming teacher trainers
