Membership FAQs

What types of membership are there?

We have three main types, individual, institutional and associate.  If you wish to join as an individual there are four types: full individual, retired, student, or basic (through our Associates).  There is also a new individual membership for 'Early Career Teachers' which is applicable for newly qualified EFL teachers (less than 5 years) who are also new to IATEFL. If you meet this criteria then you can apply to be a member of IATEFL and we will give you two years membership for the price of one. To apply, please go to our "Membership Benefits" tab and click on the ECT membership form or click on "Join Now".

I have joined IATEFL online but I need a membership number to book for conference - what should I do now?

You will receive your membership number by email shortly. This may take two working days, but near conference deadlines we will do everything we can to get these processed sooner so that everyone can book on time.

Our bank details are above, please ensure all fees are paid in addition to the amount you send for your membership.  If you have a UK bank with online banking you may be able to make the payment yourself.  Please ensure all bank transfers quote a membership number or order number, and a surname. If we can not identify the payee we will be unable to process your payment.  If you have paid by bank transfer and don't hear from us by email confirming your membership within a week please contact with your payment details so that we can trace the payment.

I would like to pay by Direct Debit, how do I do this?

When you receive your membership renewal form you will find a Direct Debit form on the second page.  If your renewal is not due please contact the office and we can send you a form.  Please note it is only possible to set up a Direct Debit from a UK based bank and we have to have the original form with your signature before we can set up the payment - scanned copies are not accepted by the bank.

Can I get an invoice for my membership?

Yes you can request an invoice when joining/renewing either online or by filling out the membership form.  We will email you an invoice once the order has been made.  If you have already made an order and did not request an invoice at the time you can still get one by emailing us. Please note that an invoice is not proof of payment, memberships will not be activated until the payment is received.

When will I receive my membership card?

Your membership card will be sent in the post shortly after you receive your email confirming that your membership is active.  Please allow for the time post takes to reach you from the UK.

As a member of an Associate you can join IATEFL at a special discounted rate.  To ensure that the special rate is only given to the Associate's members, the renewal has to go through the local Association.

As a safeguard name changes have to be done in-house, all other contact changes can be done online when you log in to your membership details.  For name changes please email to advise us of the change and we will update your record.

What’s the difference between Associates and institutional members?

Our Associates are Teaching Associations around the world who are affiliated with us. These are not institutions who offer courses. For a list of our Associate members please click here. We do not and cannot accredit any course or product from any institution and institutions are prohibited from using our logo.

I’m not an individual member, but my institution has IATEFL membership. How can I benefit from a lower booking fee for an event?

You need to contact your institution directly. Due to UK Data Protection law we cannot give you the membership number and password for your institution unless you are the named contact. Once you have the membership details, up to four delegates from your institution can book a place at any of the individual IATEFL events that are currently live. When you login, the contact name and associated details for your institution will come up. Just click in the relevant box to over-write them.
