Abstract
During the six hours, you will explore what ‘reading’ means and how to teach it.
Session 1 – Foundations and building blocks
Listening and speaking are foundations. Sounds and letters are building blocks. You will discover the potential of sounding out and whole word recognition as well as the use of graded texts.
Session 2 – Beyond sounding out: making meaning
You will discover ways to support early reading in English: shared reading, participating in read alouds and using picturebooks.
Session 3 – Becoming a reader: reading to learn
You will discover ways to engage children in independent reading with a focus on student-published storybooks.
