ESOL: Supporting forced migrant students: a case study from a Welsh university of sanctuary

Brief summary of the SIG event

Join IATEFL ESOLSIG and Mike Chick for this webinar.

Mike will be talking about the vital role that universities can play in supporting people seeking refuge from war, persecution or danger. He will argue that universities are crucially placed to use their expertise and resources to provide safe, inclusive spaces that can enhance the integration and life chances of displaced people. Looking at the humanitarian, legal, and financial issues involved, he makes the case that universities across the world should all aim to become places of sanctuary.

Mike Chick has worked in language teaching for over 25 years. At the University of South Wales, he is a TESOL teacher education lecturer and is the University Refugee Champion. His research interests surround language education for migrants in Wales and he is currently researching university sanctuary schemes for refugees and asylum seekers
