YLTSIG Mini Course A: Practical Drama in the YL ELT classroom

Registration is closed for this event

A YLTSIG 3 day mini course facilitated on Zoom by Laura McWilliams

This certified mini course is being run alongside the IATEFL Young Learners and Teenagers Special Interest Group (YLTSIG) online conference on the 27, 28 and 29 November 2020. This course, 'Practical Drama in the YL ELT classroom' will be run between 09.00 and 11.00 (UK time) each day and will cover the following areas:

Friday 27 November: Breaking barriers and building bonds

This session will look at increasing learner confidence and creating a cohesive, positive class dynamic via a range of drama-inspired games and practical activities that can be incorporated into your English lessons. We will explore relaxation techniques, ways to use puppets and masks, and teambuilding exercises.

Saturday 28 November: Loud and clear

Theatrical vocal training exercises can be extremely beneficial for learners’ English pronunciation and can help them use their voice to really express the meaning behind their words. This session will showcase various techniques and ways to adapt them into age-appropriate classroom activities, including a focus on problem sounds and intonation.

Sunday 29 November: Hey, let’s put on a show!

In this final session, we will look at the benefits of an explicit focus on drama in ELT, and share practical tips for working towards a possible performance, such as how to organise rehearsals and exploit off-stage roles. Time will also be spent reflecting on the 6-hour course overall.
