The idea and practice of decolonising is gaining momentum in different areas of education. Western ways of thinking, knowing and doing have also had an impact on English language teaching globally. There is, therefore, a growing need to explore what is happening in our profession irrespective of the specific area of ELT we work in – the relevance of (de)coloniality is overarching.
In this webinar, we will provide an understanding of what coloniality means and explore how it affects us in ELT. We will also present our perspective on how we can respond to coloniality through the ideas put forth by decolonial thinkers. Throughout our presentation, we will ask the audience to reflect on their beliefs and practices, and we will open up the floor for the discussion of their own perspectives at the end.
Dr Katalin Egri Ku-Mesu is a Teaching Fellow at the University of Leicester on the MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL programme. She is also a Lecturer in English for Academic Study at the University of Glasgow, and External Examiner in EAP at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics and a Doctor Philosophiae degree in American Literature. She serves on the committee of the IATEFL ESPSIG as Editor-in-Chief of the ESPSIG journal Professional and Academic English.
Lorena Bustos is a Lecturer in EAP at Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia. She is also a language assessment specialist who works with the Colombian Institute for the Promotion of Higher Education (ICFES). She holds an MA in Language Testing and Assessment. She has been an ELT consultant for Cambridge Language Assessment and the British Council. She has developed different learning materials for EAP students in higher education. She is passionate about assessment development, academic reading matters, and cultural aspects in ELT.
