ESOLSIG: Volunteers in ESOL – sharing the diversity and contribution of Volunteers in ESOL across the UK

Join IATEFL ESOLSIG and NATECLA  (National Association for Teaching English and Community Languages to Adults) for a joint webinar.

This webinar will host representatives from four Voluntary ESOL organisations from across the UK, showcasing how they use ESOL volunteers and their valuable contributions. You will hear from Voluntary ESOL organisations; Xenia, Merton Home, SAVTE and GESOLF.

The panel will then open up the floor to the delegates and invite questions and discussion to explore the landscape of Volunteers in ESOL, how they are recruited, trained, supported and valued.

Presenters

Sylvia Ashton: I have been working with SAVTE http://savte.org.uk as a trustee since 2018 and am now the acting co chair. Since 2019, I’ve also been on the management council for NATECLA  During the lockdown I have delivered a number of webinars for NATECLA on working remotely with ESOL learners who have little or no access to technology. I first got involved in working with ESOL in 1979 when I became a volunteer as a student. I’ve taught ESOL in a Sheffield primary school and a Rotherham secondary school. I’ve also been a community education worker in Derbyshire with responsibility for ESOL and I’ve worked for the Open College Network awarding body. From 2007 till 2017, I was a teacher educator at Sheffield Hallam University where first I led the ESOL specialism for further education then the PGCE for lecturers. I have a particular interest in working with international students and lecturers. In 2017, I left the university and wrote a book with a colleague about teaching and learning, The second edition will be published in May 2021.

Pauline Blake-Johnston (ESOL Lecturer Dundee and Angus College and Chair, NATECLA Scotland): I have been an ESOL Lecturer and Manager for over 14 years now, with extensive experience in Community, Voluntary and FE College settings – primarily in Scotland. My interests lie in the effectiveness of ESOL Policy, the argument/s of integration, social cohesion and what that means to learners as well specific teaching interests in ESOL Literacies, teaching low-levels, learner engagement and language as an empowerment tool. I am the current Chair of NATECLA Scotland, sit on the NATECLA VIE Working Group and the Equalities & Diversity Working Group as well as the Editorial Board for NATECLA’s Journal – Language Issues. I am also on the Board of Directors for Glasgow ESOL Forum and am the Website Coordinator for IATEFL ESOLSIG.
