For over 50 years, the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language, (IATEFL) has been linking, developing and supporting English language teaching professionals worldwide. From our humble origins in 1967 as a forum for English language teachers and other professionals to make contact with one another and share ideas, we are now one of the largest and most internationally representative teaching associations in the world.

IATEFL is a global professional membership association, and a UK registered charity, and yet we remain a community. We support teachers and other ELT professionals in their professional development, and provide a platform where they can offer their views, exchange research and teaching experiences and learn from each other. Find out more about IATEFL’s mission, goals and practices, here.

What IATEFL means to our members....

To celebrate our 50th anniversary, we asked our members to tell us what IATEFL meant to them. Watch this short film to hear what they had to say.

"Sharing. Growth. Reflection. Networking." (Carla, Mexico)

"It's my second family: it helped me grow professionally, encouraged me to try new things and initiate change in my local context." (Blerta, Kosova)

"It's inspirational and supportive. Makes me want to teach again. Makes me want to give the best of me." (Helen, Portugal)

"IATEFL means to me immense opportunities by providing a platform to ELT teachers all across the globe to connect, share, learn, grow and develop." (Geeta, India)

"An ELT family that cares for its members." (Laxmi, Nepal)

"IATEFL means the possibility to connect, to learn, to feel proud of my profession, to grow, to feel that my vocation is others too." (Mercedes, Agentina)

"The three C's - connect, collaborate, contribute." (Chrys, Cyprus)

"I wish to thank IATEFL for giving me a great opportunity to expand my professional family." (Gattu, Kenya)

History of IATEFL

In 2017, we published "a history of IATEFL," as a celebration of the first fifty years of IATEFL. The authors, Shelagh Rixon and Richard Smith, undertook a hugely complex research project in order to accumulate the resources and information required to write this book and we are grateful and immensely proud of the finished article. To understand the significant role IATEFL has played in the development of ELT to date, why not have a read.
