Frank Bell IATEFL Scholarship

A scholarship for a teacher or teacher trainer to attend the conference for the first time

The Frank Bell IATEFL Scholarship is run by the Bell Educational Trust in memory of their founder. Its purpose is to help a teacher or trainer who has not previously had the chance of attending a course or conference outside their own part of the world to attend the IATEFL annual conference for the first time.  Priority will be given to people who are current, full-time English classroom language teachers and/or trainers in practical calssroom language teaching methodology, rather than to lecturers, researchers, writers, heads of departments, educational managers etc.  The award will be offered to someone who is likely to be able to make use of the experience to help, inspire or train other teachers.

It is not necessary to be an IATEFL member to apply nor is it necessary to give a presentation at the conference.

The award consists of:

  • a conference registration
  • a year's membership of IATEFL
  • registration for a pre-conference event of  your choice
  • up to five nights' accommodation at a hotel at the conference venue
  • return travel within the UK from airport to conference by train or other public transport
  • a visit to the Bell school in Cambridge and two nights in a Cambridge hotel
  • an allowance of £150 towards meals and expenses
  • your return travel costs to and from the UK up to a maximum of £800 (your flight must be booked by Bell or agreed in advance with them)
  • the direct cost of a visa to come to the UK (if required)

To qualify you must:

  • be a practising teacher or trainer who has not previously visited the UK or attended a course or conference in the UK, Ireland, USA, Australia, New Zealand or Canada
  • be a teacher or trainer who can make use of or pass on what they learn at the conference to help others benefit
  • agree that if you are awarded the scholarship you will send a 250-word report for possible publication by IATEFL and Bell on your impressions of the conference.

To be considered you should apply online including:

  • a 400-500 word article 1) introducing yourself: Who are you? What is your background? What makes you tick?  Include a description of your current work and professional interests 2) listing countries  you have visited and reason (course, holiday, etc) and 3) explaining  how your visit to the conference will benefit you and others.  Outline any training you are involved in and any future developments or projects you are interested in.
  • a brief CV (2 sides A4 maximum)
  • a passport sized photo (for inclusion in the conference programme if you win)

The submission date is 22nd August 2011.  You will be informed about the award around the end of September.
