Associates

IATEFL has around 100 Associates - the exact number changes from week to week. An Associate is another Teacher Association that has entered into a mutually beneficial relationship with IATEFL. Increasingly, though, the real benefit of becoming an Associate lies in linking up to a network of teacher associations all over the world, and through this, a network of language educators all over the world. We aim to help groups of teachers form a local Teaching Association, so that they can support each other and help to develop their skills and professional development. Our booklet - Developing a TA is available to download here.
Here is how this network functions. IATEFL provides the structure, creates a forum for its Associates to communicate. Then it's up to the Teacher Associations to make the most of this - to use the electronic, printed, and face-to-face mediums for meaningful communication. So if you're not an Associate, read on to find out what benefits joining might bring to your members, and what ways there are in which YOU and YOUR MEMBERS can reach out to English teachers all over the world. And if you have already become an Associate, please use the existing channels of communication - and let us know if you have any suggestions for changes and improvements.
Our new publication for Teacher Associations - Running an Association for Language Teachers: Directions and Opportunities is available to view here.
A. S. Hornby Educational Trust and IATEFL Associates
Teacher Association development projects Award, 2012
The A. S. Hornby Educational Trust invites proposals for funding of small-scale projects from IATEFL Associates to support teacher and teacher association development.
The A. S. Hornby Educational Trust supports teacher development in developing countries and countries in transition. The Trust works with various partners to achieve this aim, including the British Council and IATEFL. The Trust wishes to make available to IATEFL Associates round the world project funding for activities in 2012-13 which will support teacher and teacher association development in practical, sustainable and contextually relevant ways.
Two projects will be funded.. A maximum of £2,000 will be granted for each project. The two projects will be chosen from the best proposals submitted by the deadline.
The projects will run during the period March – October 2012, with project reports required by the A. S. Hornby Trust from the project managers by the end of October 2012.
Successful projects supported by this scheme have been run by teachers’ associations in countries including Namibia, India, Albania and Cuba.

General Guidelines for Scholarships
IATEFL is providing an increasing number of different scholarships for English language teaching professionals. So you need to read carefully both these general guidelines and the specific conditions for each scholarship you wish to apply for. We're sorry but if you don't keep to the conditions and deadlines your scholarship applications cannot be considered. Our scholarship deadline is 22nd August 2011. But please note that:
- BESIG Conference Scholarships have a July deadline and are for attendance at the BESIG conference in the autumn. They are not for the main conference. (The BESIG Facilitators Scholarship is for attendance at the main conference and has a deadline of 22nd August 2011.)
- Consultants-E Online IATEFL Scholarship also has different deadlines and you can win a course not a conference attendance
- John Haycraft Classroom Exploration Scholarship has a different deadline, June 27th 2011 for the Glasgow Conference 2012
- you cannot win the same scholarship twice
- and if you have won a scholarship already, you cannot apply for another award until 3 conferences have passed
If you are applying for a scholarship, you need to upload a photograph. If you are a winner, this photograph will be printed in the conference brochure and on the scholars' poster. So, while we ask for a passport-sized photo, it shouldn't be passport-glum.
Many scholarships now include as part of the award a year's IATEFL membership. If you are already a member and you win one of these awards, the payment will cover your next year's membership.
All applicants for each scholarship will be informed by email of the result of the selection procedure at the stated date. So, stand by for the news and if you are a winner, let us know immediately whether or not you will accept the award.
If you are a winner, we will discuss details of how the award is to be paid once you have confirmed your acceptance. Most of the award is paid at conference but a proportion can be paid in advance to help with your travel costs.
